Good vision should not be a privilege.
We support initiatives aimed at helping people worldwide achieve better vision.
The One Dollar Glasses
According to a WHO study, more than 700 million people need glasses but cannot afford them. These people cannot work; children and young people cannot learn. The resulting loss of income is estimated at around 200 billion US dollars per year.
The OneDollarGlasses consist of an extremely light, flexible, and stable spring steel frame and pre-ground polycarbonate lenses. The material costs, including lenses, are around 1 US dollar. They are sold for 2-3 local daily wages, making the OneDollarGlasses affordable – even for very poor people.
The lenses are made of polycarbonate with a scratch-resistant, hardened surface. The OneDollarGlasses optician has a box with 25 different lens strengths from -8.0 to +10.0 diopters in 0.5 diopter increments. The glasses are based on a modular system: expensive grinding machines and electricity are not needed.
Our goal is to sustainably provide people worldwide with affordable, locally produced glasses. (odb)
Donation of glasses
Many households have glasses that are no longer used, while at the same time, people in many parts of the world cannot afford glasses.
So, if you also own one or more pairs of glasses that you no longer need, or have even already collected glasses yourself, you can simply donate them to our glasses box.
The "Glasses Worldwide" glasses collection campaign is sponsored by the German Catholic Association for the Blind (Deutsches Katholisches Blindenwerk e.V.).
You can also send your glasses directly from home:
